Robert J. Armstrong, Major USAF

I was called to active duty in 1938 as a private in the 69th Infantry Division in New York State. We were sent on maneuvers for about 2 years. Pearl Harbor was bombed in 1941 and we were at war (WWII). I was selected for pilot training and sent to Randolph Field, Texas. I received my wings and commission in 1943. I was assigned to train pilots and navigators for 2 years at the air base in San Marcos, Texas. There I met Gloria Baker. I was sent to Italy with a special flying group. The war ended and I went to France to help establish the Airline Transport for the War Crimes Commission in Germany. In 1946 I returned to the US and was discharged; I then married Gloria Baker.

In 1948 I was recalled in the Air Force as a VIP pilot and assigned to General MacArthur's staff as one of his pilots.

The Korean War started and I had many special missions to Korea.

Later I was sent to Guatemala as advisor to the Guatamalan Air Force. I returned to the states as Commander of the Air Base Squadron, Strategic Air Command Base, Minot, North Dakota.

At Minot I retired from the USAF in 1963
