Murrell enlisted in the U. S. Army on March 29, 1943, at the age of 19. He received basic and battle training at Ft Knox, KY and Camp Chaffee, AR, where he was assigned to the 16th Armored Division. He married Virginia Reynolds a hometown Ft. Worth sweetheart on May 27, 1944, before being shipped overseas to France, where he was assigned to General Patton's Third Army. He saw combat in France, Germany, and Czechoslovakia.
On April 5, 1946 he was Honorably Discharged as a Master Sergeant with a Bronze Star Metal for Meritorious Service, at the age of 22.
He and his family joined First Baptist Church Dallas in the fall of 1949. He is a retired certified public accountant.
