Col. C. C. Slaughter, Civil War

Colonel C. C. Slaughter, Civil War Veteran, Cattle King of Texas, Rancher, Banker, Baptist, Philanthropist


Born in 1837, died in 1919

He was born during the infant years of the Texas Republic.

Col. Slaughter’s father served under Sam Houston during the Texas Revolution. His grandfather served with Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans In 1815.

The Slaughter family moved to Dallas, Texas in 1873. The population was 7,054. At his death in 1919, the population was 150,000.

Col. Slaughter spent much of his time after the Civil War stopping raids by the Comanche and Kiowa Indians. They were attacking his cattle herds on his different ranches.

Ranch land he owned in 1877 to 1905 included more than one million acres and forty thousand head of cattle

He founded the Texas Cattle Raisers Association.

He established the Confederate Veterans Reunion Association June, 1901.

He was greatly influenced by George W. Truett, pastor of First Baptist Church of Dallas. A new building in 1868 cost $90,940 and Col. Slaughter contributed $60,000. He contributed $320,000 to Baylor Hospital in 1920.

He funded the statue of Robert E. Lee in Austin, Texas.
