As a young man of 18, Bob enlisted in the U.S. Navy from his home town of Groves, Texas. During part of his service he was based in San Diego, California. He served on U.S.S. LST 274. One overseas trip was from the California coast down through the Panama Canal, returning to California as the end of the war was nearing. On ship, he was given the responsibility of keeping the ship store. His discharge papers show 17 months' sea duty in the American Area Campaign, World War II Victory.
Bob's family proudly served to bring peace to our nation. In addition to his service, his older brother served in the Air Force, seeing active battle duty in France and England, and his younger brother served in the Army.
